CHART OF THE WEEK: Unemployment on the Rise in Indy

  • The Indianapolis-Carmel metropolitan statistical area (MSA) managed to keep unemployment below that of the state of Indiana until Q1 2013, when the unemployment rate was 0.1 percent higher than the state.
  • The unemployment rate in the MSA sharply climbed since Q3 2012 and was most impacted by the loss of 14,000 jobs in the Private Service Providing sector.
  • Since Q1 2012, industrial-using companies in the MSA gained the most jobs, especially those in Manufacturing and Trade, Transportation & Utilities sectors, which gained 13,000 and 8,400 jobs, respectively.
